Kathy Brown

Kathy Brown stands proud as one of house music’s true divas. Her rich, powerful voice and mesmerising presence has put her in the foreground of the club scene playing out live with DJs, and laying down some infamous tracks.

The lady responsible for local excellence started out in the music industry in much the same way as many of her own heroines – Patty La Belle, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Martha Wash – just a few of the divas which Kathy Brown admires and derives her inspiration from. Her style has evolved through the years from soulful R’n’B to a more R’n’B House flavoured direction, often compared to Whitney and Aretha. Always chic, always smooth but with an undeniably powerful edge.

At nine years old Kathy unleashed her vocal chords in the gospel choir of her native town Southern Carolina. In her tender youth she performed in musicals The Wise And Bubblin and Brown Sugar.

At 21 she was discovered singing in the Laundromat, which led Kathy to become a member of R’n’B group Sweet Cinnamon. She stayed with the group for three years performing to New York’s crowds. As a result Kathy met Sony/Columbia Music’s Dave Shaw and was invited to audition her first track ‘Can’t Play Around’. A major step which in her own words “turned everything around”.

Since her first outing, Kathy has enjoyed a string of successes with tracks such as ‘Make Me Feel Like Singin’ on AM:PM, ‘Happy People’ on Blaze Productions, ‘Joy’ with David Morales on Azuil, and ‘I Appreciate’ on Cuttin Records. Other work includes Chanta Moore’s track ‘I’ll Never Find Another Love’, and co-author of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘Got To Be Forever’.

This vault of singing pedigree puts Kathy at the forefront of the club scene. Kathy’s long list of artistic collaborations include Kenny Dope Gonzales, Little Louie Vega and Cevin Fisher. She was responsible for the vocals on three Defected tracks, ‘J Magic drum’, Base outing ‘Love is not a game’ and Warren Clark’s ‘Over You’. Her most recent and totally original work is the delicious piece ‘Give It Up’.
